I remember that in high school, the history teacher once said that the teacher who used the microphone in class was not a first-class teacher, and then he was very proud to praise himself: “like I have a loud voice, I don’t use the microphone, even the students sitting in the last row can hear my voice.”. I remember it vividly, and think loud voice is a necessary condition for a good teacher. Now I am a teacher for the first time, and I also stand on the platform. The only difference is that I am the teacher of qicong class. However, it is also because I teach a group of children who have difficulty in listening that I can reflect on this long-standing belief after many years: the teacher’s voice is loud, and the students must hear clearly?
In the middle of June, I participated in a seminar on qicong education on the return of deaf children to the mainstream. After the seminar, I gained a lot and felt a lot. The speaker, Dr. Carol Flexer, a Canadian listening expert, told us at the meeting that the voice mainly includes vowels and consonants (i.e. aspirated or not aspirated). When the volume of the voice is amplified, the vowel part of the voice will be amplified, but the change of the consonant part is very small. What really affects the effect of the listener’s language reception is the part of the consonant. The main reason why the hearing-impaired people can’t hear clearly is that part of their consonant receiving area is blocked. In other words, the definition of a person’s language depends mainly on whether the voice of the consonant part is clear or not, and the relationship with the volume is relatively low. Therefore, for a child with hearing impairment, even if he says “Dad” loudly, it often becomes “ah ah” in his ears. It can be seen that the teacher’s voice is loud, and the students may not be able to hear clearly.
In fact, whether the students’ listening is normal or not, the teacher’s teaching mainly depends on whether they can reach the “clear” level, rather than emphasizing the volume. If there are deaf students in the class, it is better for the teacher to use the hearing aid transmitter with frequency modulation system, so that the sound reception effect of deaf students can reach the ideal state. As for the ordinary class, it is also better to set up a volume expansion device with improved language clarity so that every student can benefit.
Nowadays, many teachers feel that the volume is not loud enough, or in order to cherish their throats, they often buy microphones from their own pocket, hoping that the content of the class can be heard by every student, but the effect is very limited, so it’s better to consider the problem of language clarity
